I read a lot of posts to get ideas of what types of things happen to each of the models etc. Gives me a good idea of what to avoid/desire etc.

As I am unknowing, is there a hole in the top of the bell housing that allows a bolt to fall in?

This side shows the oval hole above the sensor, not sure about the other side.

So, my dumb question for the day. Why is there a hole? Seems like it is an invitation for accidents like this. What is the purpose for this hole?

This is just a guess, but maybe an inspection hole? maybe it is supposed to have a plug that is missing? don't know just a guess.

I don't know about C5 trannies, but on a Mk4 Jetta there is a hole for true TDC and it's at the top of the tranny where it connects to the engine, but it is usually plugged up by a plastic cap...

Default ??? The oval holes are for prying the TC loose from the flex plate

IIRC the TC comes out with the transmission; you unbolt the TC from the flex plate and pull the tranny/tc out…you use a special tool or a universal strap to hold the TC onto the transmission input shaft when removing the transmission assembly. Audi Bracket 30-211 A holds the tc in the trans.
