Default Caliper Interchange for 1999 & 2001 A6 quattro

I'm looking for a new set of rear calipers for my 1999 A6 quattro. I presently have 237,000 miles on the odometer, so I'm not looking to spend $250 per caliber on a new set.

I found a pair online for a 2001 A6 parts car. The part number listed is 8E0615424. When I called my local Audi dealer I was told the part number for my car is 8E0615424A. Can someone tell me if the "A" at the is specifically for the quattro model or if these parts are interchangeable?

Thanks AudiWorld!

Default I've looked at the pics online and they appear interchangeable.

Depending on what they cost I'd probably try them. Usually the last digit alpha refers to an updated part or different supplier. Why do you need a new set of calipers? Why not just rebuild yours...unless the piston is damaged or cylinder scored so it leaks brake fluid or the emergency brake mechanism is seized (and even then most of the time they can be loosened/lubricated/resealed with new O-ring) very little goes wrong with calipers.

Default Re: Why Not Rebuild vs. buy replacement

When I went to have my brake fluid flushed my mechanic was unable to because the bleeder screws had rusted and he told me he hadn't had any luck drilling them out and re-tapping the screw. He advised me to get a new set from RockAuto or comparable.

Or bad mechanic. Stuck bleeder screw often come out with Kroil or P'Blaster or even a little heat but some mechanics just twist them and they either come out or break. After all, it's not their car! It's also another profit-maker to install new calipers because many people just tell the mechanic to get the calipers.
When or if you get new calipers use antiseize on the threads and flush your brake system annually, especially in salt-using states. USE the little rubber bleeder cap too.

Default The part number without "A" is Not interchangeable

I called Audi in Plano, TX (where my car originated) & spoke with someone in the parts department, who told me the part number without the "A" on the end was the part number for an A4 ('98-04, I believe). I agree the parts look identical. My search goes on.

Just because it's for an A4 doesn't meant it won't interchange to the A6. All things being equal, I'd try the A. How much are you risking? $50? LOL.

Default Re: In the Meantime

Car is (was) still drivable. I was just wanting to change the break fluid for the first time since 2005 (and 185,000 miles). The bleeder screws are rusted I've found an OEM rebuild for $80.

Now the right front brake is making noises that aren't normal (see my latest post).

Audi mixed and matched calipers on the C5 like nobody's business. The best way to compare is via the brake coding on the build stickers in the trunk.
