Default Seeking advice on A6 4.2 purchase decision.

Looking at a 2002 A6 4.2 (black/black)with 23,000 miles; all options except NAV and warm weather package; Audi Assured, $34,600.

Also, 2003 A6 4.2(ming blue/platinum)with 39,000 miles; all options except Parktronic (?); Audi Assured, $35,500.

Both have Sport Pkg, Prem Pkg, Cold Pkg

The tradeoffs seem to be:
2003: 10 months more on factory warranty, NAV, 16,000 more miles, newer model year.

2002: 10 fewer months warranty, no NAV, 16,000 fewer miles, $900 less.

Happy with either color. Comments, Advice?? Is 39,000 miles too much on the '03??
Thanks much.
PS: replacing older A6, keeping A8L!!

Default Minor consideration: does the '03 have the Tip. shift

on the steering wheel? The '02 does, and I really like that feature, especially since I had the tranny 00032 coded just an hour ago! Also, does the '03 have heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel?

Default 2002 is the best year as far as options go. Many features removed in 2003.

I could have had a new 2002 in 2003 but I wanted a new 2003 4.2 since I figured there were new and improved features for the 2003 year. WRONG! My salespersondudethingy omitted the fact that these things were removed. Boy was I pissed. '
Go with the 2002..

Default well, the '03 has the better color, but as for warranty,

isnt it 5yr, 50K miles? if so, the 03 warranty might run out sooner? for everything except color, Id take the '02, but not black on black, and i personally would never settle for a color i didnt really want. in that case Id wait, there will always be more

I bought 02 CPO a6 4.2 few months ago, had 58K miles, all key options, and final price $27.5K plus tax. Except for minor cosmetic dent on wheel well exterior, car was in exceptional condition. So your price may be a bit high, but no more than mine (for whats it worth, I think -- but not 100% -- I pushed dealer down close to limit on price; initial list was 29.5 or so, "final" was 28)

My wife loves the car, I like it but gas mileage is as shocking as the acceleration ! city seems as low as 15-, hwy 20-22 mpg, but shouldnt be surprised with V8

One important point for you, nav on 02 is a huge negative. We never use it, "typing in" street names with the one button procedure is exasperating, just too many steps that are not all intuitive. Works fine if you can take 10-15 minutes before you start to program in correct city, street name, number, etc. Also, there is no map, just visual and audio signals. Sometimes works well, but many times it will say and show, eg, "turn left in 500 feet", except you get close and there is a left, an angled left and then a small side street left, your nav box is pointing just left, and you're trying to figure out which left while people honk at you. So NAV is big negative, unsafe if you try to do anything while driving, first generation relic that should be removed from all resale A6s. Only easy feature is display current street

Good luck

I'd trade a few features for two turbos, though... ;-)

To compare warranties, check the In-Service date. My 01 had a very late in-service date (Sept 01) and the result was an original warranty a year longer than another 01 I was looking at. Bought the car in Oct 03 and had 2 years original and 2 years Certified warranty. Still on original wtty. Higher mileage shortens the original warranty, and some things are not covered under the cetified warranty.
I agree the early Nav is useless. I never have used it after first try. And I find Parktronic so annoying that I turned it off (by disconnecting the wire to the little speaker that beeps up under the rear package tray). Make certain both are Audi Assured. If you like loaner cars, buy it at the dealer where you will service it.

Default All the same options available both '02 and '03. AOA just redefined what was in

each package. More was standard in '02. The '03 has NAV and the '02 doesn't. Parktronic on '02, not sure about the '03.

Is the NAV the same as on my '01 A8L? Seems OK, but limited.
