Still wondering if the Transfer case is the same even if the transmission is different.

Default Here we go... Time to go to work!

I did purchase a used transfer case off eBay. The donor car is the same year 2000, model A6, engine ART, and transmission code ECF. It comes with a warranty, and looking at the users eBay store it looks pretty reputable, I see they mainly specialize in Audi/VW salvage parts. Ive just ordered the part over the weekend. While it's in transit, Ill go ahead and drop the exhaust, drive shaft, and pull out the transfer case. Ive got the car up on jack stands already, The Elsa Audi Manual is showing that I can get all the bolts out to remove the transfer case without having to drop the trans. But if anyone has any insight or experience doing this job please, I'd love some advice on anything that might make this an easier task. BTW anyone have a suggested fluid type and viscosity weight in this transfer case? Anyone know? Wish me luck!

You can use the VAG specific fluid, but most seem to agree it is just a synthetic gear oil like Mobil-1.

All that is in there is a Torsen differential.

-Thanks N Jay. Thanks too for offering to sell me the one you had but with what little funds I have to work with, not knowing if your part was compatible, it wasn't much room for error for me money wise. BTW how is your sons Audi holding up after the repairs?

So far so good.
We keep checking things off the list.

And remember lots of 2002 parts waiting for a good home.

Also, given the propensity of these things to leak at the rear seal, I would replace that with new.

I would also think about replacing the seals between the unit and the transmission.
My thinking is if the rear seal goes, the probably the front or inner seal could go, and given the number of people who have transmission fail at about the same age/mileage as rear seals, maybe contamination of the ATF with gear oil is part of the problem.

Thoughts?

Yes replace the output seal. As far as internal leakage like fluids swapping, I havent seen that yet, I imagine is very very rare. The failure you have with the transfer case blowing up is unheard of. I imagine it leaked out its fluid from the common output seal and then came apart finally.

Well well, I cant find the transfer-case gasket anywhere without having to by the entire $350 transmission rebuild seal kit. Ive tried looking at Blaupart, Rock Auto, and Partsgeek.com, nada!
I may have to build my own gasket. But Im worried about the roller bearing tolerances on the shaft between the trans and transfer case. Auto parts stores carry the paper gasket sheets but the thinnest that I can find is .08mm thickness. This gasket is paper thin, .08 seem way to thick, Im sure even after torquing down the bolts it wouldn't crush down. Ive seen a few tutorial videos on youtube, I like this guys technique substituting cardboard as gasket material, Brake line bolt hole punches are genius too.

Try calling ZF Technical Services in Illinois.
It can't hurt to try.

None of the contacts internal to the gear case look like they would be affected by the gear case gasket. Splined internals, etc.

Google is your friend…here is some .80mm (.031") paper gasket.
