You have to remove the clips. It slides away. Then try to wiggle the cover out of the way. Make sure lights are off otherwise you will get a nasty shok! It's not 12v. HIDs have high voltage ~85+ when powered on. If they have been on, wait until they cool off. They are hotter than halogens!
Next, twist the connector with the single red cable. Then turn the bulb holder and carefully remove it. Look at the base of the bulb and make sure the new one lines up properly with the dimple on the projector's base. This is tricky and patience is the key. Also the big lead on the side of the bulb has to be towards the ground... twist the holder back into place and put the power connector back and the cover back and slides clips bac on.

Don't touch bulb's glass part. If you did, make sure to clean it thoroughly with alcohol.

Don't force any thing. It all should go back/come apart without lot of force. If somethig is not lining up, check carefully and try again.

Enjoy your new lights. They will look like more white than bluish white in the beginning. They need to "burn-in" to get that color around ~200hours

Right on...Exact instructions for my 2000 A6 2.7T, no need to remove the healdights :-). installed both my HID bulbs in 40 minutes. First (driver side - that was the blown out one) took longer - also had to remove dont know what its called(air duct?) to easily get to the headlights, also trying not to break something. The second one was a snap. Thanks to 4.2ASix

I know it is an old thread, but ...

I have 2003 allroad and need to replace D2S light bulb. I was able to remove the housing, don't know which way I'm suppose to twist the bulb holder. There is no pins, just black holder.
Any body?

Thanks

It's also pretty obvious if you look at the new bulb…I assume you have new bulbs in your hot little hands? There is not holder per se…the D2S bulb just inserts and twists/locks in the projector housing.

There's a whole string of threads (fabric?) regarding WHICH D2S bulb to get so I won't open that can of worms (to mix a metaphor..LOL!)

I don't have bulb in yet. I had to turn cable so I can remove it from light bulb. So what you are saying I should be able to just pull bulb out. No twisting or turning required.

I think the piece I was trying to twist is #12 on the diagram

Ah! my very first repair - well, it was more for kicks, replaced them with ultinons for whiter look... when everything else was working perfectly and I was having strong infatuation

still, it was a upgrade.

Now, it's more like a wife. Love instead of infatuation, maintenance and compromise to keep it going as far as it can .
