Default Control arm kit difference?

I've searched the archived posts and seen vague references, but nothing conclusive. I want to replace the control arms on a 2002 A6q 3.0, and I ordered a kit, but I want to be sure that I got the right parts before I dig into the job. My real question is: What changes at the VIN split in the middle of the 2002 model year? The vehicle in question was made after the VIN split, so it seems to be grouped in with the "late" 2002-2004 vehicles versus 1998-"early" 2002. I looked at the car, and it has aluminum uprights if that means anything. I've also seen reference to a 16mm vs 20mm taper on the front, lower ball joint. Is this part of the difference? In sourcing replacement parts, it also seemed to be important to note whether the car came with 16" vs 17"/18" wheels. What's the difference?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Teu

I was putting this list together for myself the other day. Mine has the sport suspension and the 17" wheels so there is definitely a difference in the part number for the 16". These are all for mine so hopefully it will either confirm yours or show a problem.

The lower straight control arm ball joint is what's different between steel uprights and aluminum uprights.

There aren't many kits on the market for aluminum upright vehicles. We're one of the few places that do have one specifically for them.

Tie rod ends are also different. 1-piece vs. 2-piece..

Thanks for the responses. I purchased a kit from a seller that specifically listed my application (2002 after the VIN split, 16" rims, 3.0 AVK engine), but of course I got the wrong front/lower arms. I need the 16mm taper, and I got the 20mm taper. Everything else fit just fine and looked just like the parts being replaced. I'm currently waiting for a response from the outfit that sold me the kit.

Hi, I think I am facing the same problem. I got the kit and I got the wrong taper as you did. Did you find the right part? My OEM lower control arm has part number 4B3 407 155A marked on the part. Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know the difference in pinch pin diameters between the C5/B6 upper control arms and the D2 upper control arms? The bolt and pin diameter is what I am after. Are they the same? I'm trying to get adjustable upper control arms but no one makes them anymore and I want to see if I can just lengthen a set made for C5/B6. This is assuming the pinch pins are the same diameter. Any help on dimensions would be awesome. I'll be measuring my D2/A8 to see but if anyone has C5 info that would be very helpful.

Thanks!
