Internal Control Module (EEPROM) Error P1640 18048
I've got a 2000 A6 with the ART 4.2 motor. Its got 88K on it and I just got this code: Internal Control Module (EEPROM) Error P1640 or 18048. Previous to that I have been having trouble with the Bank 1 main cat. The recomended corrective action for the ECM is to replace it. Is there anything I can do besides buy a new one at $625? Can the EEPROM be flashed or can I replace just it? Is there a chip or something that I can change? I do not know what I am asking these are just my random guesses in the dark. Would anyone use one from a junk yard?

Rocky's right...with that code, Bently's repair manual says to replace engine control module...
You may find a used one on ebay or one of the Audi recycling junk yards...do a google search!

Thanks
Thanks. Thats what I was afraid of. I am just skeptical because it seems to be running fine with normal performance and fuel mileage. The shop said it might be a fluke but the ligt came back on pretty quick. I haven't read the the codes again yet. If anyone has a good stock ECU they don't need let me know.

I have doubts internal module error is causing the cat codes. That code can show up for not only bad module, but poor grounds, low voltage to the ECU, and feedback from strange installed devices. Like cheap ebay aftermarket HID kits. I see those cause ABS brake computer and ECU internal memory errors and total loss of module communication when the headlights are switched on. Just an example anyway.
