If you like the car, repair whatchoo got.
It shouldn't be $4K either…tensioners are available online for much less than stealer price, the plastic shoes are about $22 a pair (you need 4 on a V8), and gaskets, etc. are another couple hundred (spendy Audi stuff).
An independent mechanic should be able to do it for around $2K. A few hundred more if the chains have to be replaced.
It's pretty easy to get my particular car w/ a shot transmission, wrecked and etcetera for even less than the alleged cost of replacing my tensioners (3K). Plus I already put 4K in the engine alone in the past 3 months. But, I am not interested in my engine any more & I'm about 90% sure I'm going to put a built RS6 engine in. Call me "non compose mentis," yo. Thanks for the input though John B Sloop

Why not? I have no problem putting 'soft money' into the Audi & I wouldn't consider selling it. Replacing the engine would worsen the problem? I'm infamous for subbing it out, so I won't do anything personally. Own Nothing, Control Everything. Would/ can you kill an Audi?

Felt. A RS6 is around 20K and has more than likely original everything/ minimal services done. My car has brand new everything w/ 10K in service done to it in totality. I couldn't sell my car for more than 10K. The math doesn't make sense for me, cheque it-

4.2 was= 10K
Things done= 10K
Me= 20K all in

Sold= 10K (Bollocks)
RS6= 20K
Things= 10K
Math= 40K total

Alternate Math
4.2= 10K
Things= 10K
Built RS6 Engine/ isht Installed w/ 6MT= 10K
Math= 30K Spent total

I like the 30K option better, it'll afford me some floor mats and a air freshener after all is said/ done.

Why would u junk an engine for chain tensioners. Take it to a shop that not a total rip off. Tensioners can be had for 2-300 bucks each, and its like 3 hours a side to do them. Not 3k. your being ripped off.

I was told 3K both sides and all other pricing provided/ accepted via this mechanic has been within reason comparatively speaking. But, considering I'm not the pro, I will take your advise and see where it lands me by taking it elsewhere. Regardless, I still dislike the Engine... So I am still considering a swap even if I'm able to not get ripped off on correcting this engine. Thanks for the info Prospeeder, I like it.

Book time is actually 9.2 hours to do both which is generous lol. if its 90$ an hour, thats 828$ labor. 600$ for tensioners, about 60-80 bucks in gaskets....wheres 3000 dollars in that I have no idea.

Heres just one. Hmmm 150$....i say 300$ because we shops do need to mark things up for profit. But its NOT ok for a shop to buy cheap stuff and charge dealer list which is probably why its so much, as list is like 850 a tensioner. But there are aftermarket ones out there for 150-300 or so. I put a 150$ tensioner on my 1.8T Passat and so far its been working fine. Supply your own parts for much less, and just pay them labor.

Not a good idea to supply parts….if they go bad you're out of luck…and are you good enough to tell whether the part is bad or the install was bad/sloppy.

If you're going to have someone else do it, they supply the parts and the warranty.

Knock yourself out if you can get an RS6 engine installed with a 6MT for 10K.
(Grabs bowl of popcorn and settles back to watch).

It's $100 an hour and you're correct in assuming he is trying to get me at $850 per tensioner, so theres $2600. The other few hundred? I do not know. But yeah, when I heard 3K, it made made think. Thanks for the due diligence in your post, It's much appreciated.
