Yes, and running a different ratio in the rear than the front will do the same.
Hence why I said that the idea is dead as soon as I found out that the ratios were different.

Then this confirms that the front and rear are the same ratios to arrive at the final drive ratio (combined) so to speak, funny thing is that my chevy express cargo van has a 3:73 rear along with my 04 A6q 3.0 but the stinking g-lock posi on the bowtie unlocks above 25mph.....kinda fun in the snow but nothing compared to the A6 with snow tires with ESP off.

I'm just stating that the final ratios are the same between two vehicles that I own and one has posi the other two are open on the Audi, I'm very clear about what the Torsen center is doing.....No situation just a semi-relative comment.

It is actually not the number of gears, but the highest and lowest relative 1:1.
Effective gear ration is "Transmission Gear Ratio" X "Final Drive Ratio"
So a 1:1 top gear and a 3.50:1 final is 350:1 total, just like a top gear of 0.8:1 and a 4.37:1 final drive.
5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 gear transmissions just give a lot more room to be above 1:1 (What used to be called "Overdrive")
Then you get into tire diameters . . . .
