Fan Control Module Confusion??

Fan Control Module Confusion??
Ok, so what I have seen is that a4's have a module connected to the top of the radiator fans. The a6's are on driver side frame rail. I have a 2002 a6 with the 3.0L in it. My fan module is connected to the cooling fans on top of the radiator. Why is this?????? Also it says the thermoswitch is located in the lower radiator hose??? I don't have a switch down there anywhere. PLEASE HELP
