First front axle this weekend
Just curious about the extra 180 degrees after the torque spec is reached. Doesn't that really increase the torque past the 115 or 190 NM? Also, not sure whether I have the M14 or M16 bolt - it's the 27mm hex not the 17mm allen.
Probably need another cortisone shot after this one. 4 cars with repairs needed. It doesn't end.

Torque plus angle is a more accurate way to tighten bolts, especially stretch bolts.

I didn't even think about stretching. Some of the threads are saying that it is maxing out at about 150 degrees and another says for used wheel bearing they only go to 90 degrees. This bearing was replaced about 50K ago. Other side still has original with 204K on it.

I prefer the female hex head axle bolt over the big hex head bolt…easier to get the hex bit socket in there and set it up for angle tightening gauge…I also use a ľ" drive breaker bar and a 4' pipe with an adapter down to the ˝" drive hex bit socket…really easy to angle tighten the axle bolt.

Two issues…thread deformation and bolt stretch. I put new one next to old one and if it isn't any different I've used the old one. Full torque/turn spec.

Do you know which is M14 and which is M16? If there was a choice, probably would have gone with the female as well. New shaft came with the big hex. Have a 1/2 inch breaker with a 4 foot extension from my old hydraulic jack. But probably going to have to get a new torque wrench since my latest is only 3/8 though I do have an old half inch beam wrench.
Your dealer should know and give you the right one with your VIN.
˝" beam torque wrench should work…they used to go to 250 #ft.
˝" breaker bar will work until it doesn't…some of them bend and break…my Craftsman ˝" flexes too much for my taste.

I think the 4.2 came with the M16..dunno if the 2.7T did.
