Default Gear shift speeds

Hello all,
I live in a town where the speed limit is 60km per hour and my a6 Quattro only engages top gear (5) at about 67 kph. This means as long as I drive within the speed law I am using gear 4 and more fuel. Is there a way to tell the computers to change to travelling gear at a lower speed. I am always breaking the lay trying to save fuel by driving at 70 in a 60 zone.
Thanks.

Are you in Sport/Dynamic mode? If so, in D, gears will shift up sooner and down later.
The transmission mapping is designed to keep the car in a gear that will be most efficient for engine rev performance and fuel consumption. You could actually use more fuel if the car was in too high a gear as it can take more gas pedal to accelerate.

Thanks. I do not know how to check the mode I am in though. I have a licensed VCDS hex interface and I will try to fumble my way through.

There is a manual function.
And if you're running under 1500 rpm around town chances are you're as slow as you should run a C5 engine. The new 8 speed 4cyl turbo audis will run as low as 1200 rpm but then they have a lot more torque and a shifty trans so when you need to go it will.

There's nothing to do in VCDS. If you are in Sport mode it will show on the shift lever. If in normal Drive mode, you are in D. It should also show D or S in the DIS (Drive info screen).

Thanks mate. I do change the gears manually until the engine temp reaches normal working temp and everything is fine.
