Default Gearbox issues

I have an audi a6 2.4 v6 98`. Got it for free recently and it has not been used for at least 3 years. The problem is that when I put it in Drive, it barely goes forward without using alot of throttle. I was wondering if the gearbox oil may be the the issue, but i can only find the drain plug for the gearbox. I cant find the plug where i can put in new oil. any help? thanks.

Default Look for the 2-3" hole.

It's a big hole in the bottom of the trans. It acts like a standpipe…you fill the pan with a J-hook type of tubing or a copper pipe bent to a J. There is a procedure for filling the trans, temp limits, etc.

But it sounds like you need to drain the pan, drop it, and clean it and put in a new filter and fill it up. Maybe it will work, probably won't.

Make sure you open up the big hole first…it's a bitch to open it with the pan off the car. Tough to hold the pan while you twist out the bolt.

Yes it is pretty obvious where the filling hole is located when i read this.
I drained the old fluid and as far as i know the ATF oil should be red, but this oil was black and smelt really old. Probably not a bad idea to change it. Do you think i should buy a service kit with a new filter before i change the oil?
Thanks for good info.

You can try new fluid, but once it gets that bad these transmissions are usually toast.

ESPECIALLY if you have tried to get it to move.

The transmission is fine, the problem was the tranmission control module, not the gearbox. So glad to avoid a potential gearbox overhaul. As far as i know there has been a leak on the passenger side, and water has messed up the TCM.
