how much ATF fluid do I need?
Hey guys,
My Trans filter etc all get here today and I want to make sure I have everything all lined up before I start the process...
I was planning dropping the pan, changing the filter, being that the car only has 85K on it I was also thinking of pulling both oil cooler lines and draining as much ATF from the radiator as possible (Is this a good idea?)... I know the TC holds a decent amount of fluid... from what I have been reading it sounds like the dry capacity of the trans is up to 11liters, is that right? I'm assuming that I wouldn't get all of that out of it, and I cant imagine that I would get more than maybe a liter or two out of the radiator...
I know that when I put in a new radiator, and had let my S4 trans sit un-plugged (drain plug open) for a few days (but no filter or pan drop), I put over 2 gallons, it was 2 full gallons and at least 2 quarts and maybe 3 quarts i think. But I was also using an air compressor to force fluid from the bottle into the trans so there was a lot of extra over flow
Does 10 to 12 quarts seem like a safe amount of fluid to buy? I hate to buy too much, but I don't want to run out part way through either.

No…ZF says you only need 5 liters. Buy six..blauparts

ZF service procedure for draining/filling trans says you only need 5:

OTOH, blauparts kit has 6 liters…
Audi S6 Transmission Fluid Filter Change Kit - Audi S6
The other thing is ZF says the transmission came with a semi-synthetic fluid.
Also change the transmission fluid every 48K miles for severe service.
85K is well aged.
I would try to change it to a full synthetic.
Blauparts kit has full synthetic German stuff:
6 Liters of Fully Synthetic German Audi S6 Automatic Transmission Fluid (See Below Technical Information)
Fluid meets Audi TL52162 specifications and is equivalent to Audi part number VW G 052 162 A2.
Of course, you're only getting roughly ½ the fluid changed so you might want to get 10 liters, change the oil and filter and use 5 liters first, run the car for 10K miles and change just the ATF again.

I wouldn't worry about draining the extra fluid, unless the fluid that comes out looks or smells really bad.
In that case, I would just do a full second change in a few 1000 miles.

Dry, the 5HP19 trans calls for about 9.5L.

Both of the ECS kits come with 4 liters, that seemed like too little fluid. OK that gives me a better idea what to get for fluid. I just didn't want to start the process and end up with too little fluid but didn't want to buy way too much fluid either.

SloopyJohn, I had thought about doing a fluid change and then doing it again in 5 to 10K... but my TC is acting up currently, I'm REALLY hoping I have a seal or something that is leaking, I'm going to get under it tonight and poke around, so I'm hoping it is just low on fluid and causing the TC issue (doesn't seem to be releasing when I come to a stop the engine RPMs drop to about 750 and you can feel the engine straining against the brakes). If the fluid is low and the fluid change "fixes" the TC issues then i will do a fluid change again in a few thousand miles for sure. If the TC issues persist, then I will be shopping for parts to do a 6MT swap
