Audi a6 quattro bi turbo with high miles
I have a lovely spotless audi a8 and I am after something to ply about with. I have seen an Audi a6 quattro bi turbo with 170k miles going for £1000 and wondered if I should go near it?

Depends on how well it was maintained by the previous owners. If it passes a pre purchase inspection by an independent shop who has no relationship with the prior owners, you're probably OK.
If it has a tiptronic automatic, it might not last much longer, then again, I have a 2001 A6 2.7 with tip with 290K miles, and it still runs great. I also have a 2001 a6 2.7 6MT (180K miles) and a 2000 a6 2.7t 6MT (140K miles) that also run great.

Well since you're no stranger to the species, you are aware of part costs and their availability on your island. At 170k I doubt that i would buy the car i own, even though i know the maintenance on it has been meticulous. I'd be too worried about the transmission and torque converter issues popping up. That's just because i worry about things i know little about though. Like that David Feherty from that island of yours……… Slainte!

I am the same. even with my a8 being in very good condition, every little noise scares me. lol
the a6 I say is in good condition and I am not bothered about having to change turbos but but yes the auto box is a worry

I agree with Nialist. You could easily be walking into a bottomless pit and even the prepurchase inspection cannot predict the future. I have an AR with 2.7t and 125k. But i had it from day one. 7.5k OCIs, synthetic and enough parts that the supply houses know me by name. And its a 6mt.
you really need to see a full service record first to how it was treated, what was done so far and any lingering trouble areas (leaks). Should have had two timing belts by now. Turbos? Control arms? A/T? Compressor? MOST importantly, are you doing the work yourself or paying someone?

work I would be doing myself.
its a big risk but I wont be relying on it as my daily driver so it can sit while I work my way through any problems.
car like that for £1000 is hard to say no too

I bought an Audi A6 2001 2.7 for $5,000 it runs amazi g at 110k miles. If you have the know how and want to get a fun project the 2.7 is very fun and has close to limitless potentiality maintained. $1000 for an Audi is good but if its condition is questionable then so is maintanance. If you have knowledge and income it would make a great little project. And if you continue mainanance it'll last you a lifetime. Machines don't die just break down you can ALWAYS bring it back.

when i was in secondary school, i was given an old AH 3000 for free. Most expensive car free car I ever had.
what is it like getting aftermarket parts there? i assume lots of mailing from the mainland EU. Any source for parted out cars?
if you can do much of the work yourself, have sources for aftermarket parts at reasonaable prices (not dealer), I would look at it, records, and inspect. A good AUDI mechanic with knowledge of A6s and 2.7ts should have good instincts. My advice, not just a good mechanic, but one that knows this type car and engine.

Hey torque converter replacement buddies!! I had mine replaced too at about 105k (seriously like four months after I bought the car for ~$9k, thankfully I got an extended warrenty and it covered the TC, would have had a heart attack if I had to pay like $3000 to replace it)
Do you know if there were any updates or anything to them? Sounds like the failures were fairly common, I'm hoping it lasts a hell of a lot longer then 100k considering I never auto cross or race it... I've already got 60k on this replacement...
