i may be leaving the fold
After 404 thousand kilomters and lots of smiles it may be time to move on . The deciding factor was a teenage driver who has now twice smacked up the A6. lost control in a snow storm and whacked the back end putting it into a guard rail, rear bumper, rear fender , tail light.
two weeks ago was horsing around with his buddies and smashed front horn , grill, fog light and windshield washer sprayer hitting a snow bank. I have decided to replace the A6 with something else, something he is buying with his own money , its the only way I figure he will respect a car. due to financial situation we can only have one car between us as the insurance company otherwise will make him primary on a second car.
Its been a good run. I might pull some high value bits off before sending it to the wreckers though. the TCM seems to be in high demand these days. il let you guys know as the days get closer.

Second that ^^^^^You will be missed!
This happens with time and aging cars on these forums, I was already reading about the new C8's "that I can't afford".
We ran into the same poop with the middle son ten years ago wrecking the handed down DD and after that also the daughters car wrecking episodes we decided at whatever cost to make sure the title was in their name at 18, this kept the potential money sniffing civil stuff out of my house and pocket....and man 2007 was a bad year for the daughter, boyfriend and car with his med bills near $750k....our insurance dropped her like a hot potato.

So what made you settle on that A4? I've been thinking of replacing the 2001, and could go a little smaller--the A4's just right. I'm torn between the fun of driving an Audi and the PITA factor. But I'll say that after every test drive I've been glad to get back in the ol' A6--except for an (expensive) 2012 A4. (Ok, the G37xS coupe was a blast, but impractical.) The oil consumption issues/lawsuit on the 2009-11 A4s also tells me that features like the quick-failing suspension arms, the water pump under the intake manifold, etc. haven't gone away in later years.
Bottom line, that old A6 still has everything I want or need, and I haven't found a compelling reason to get something newer. But I have a '96 Volvo for the teen daughters to drive.

well actually the main reason for me were .
Gas milage for my son, hauling an a6 around with a 2.8 uses a fair bit of gas.
smaller cars are easier to drive no doubt.
I like the audi brand , this will be my third. I think they are a good car if you can maintain them.
I just stubmbled on this one , a 2006 manual 2.0 T for 3500 bucks,

Sounds like a good deal! And even though it's a bit smaller, the A4 still has all the features that let you take advantage of it's size--I pretty much regard lay-down rear seats as mandatory.

I say stick the kid in an old sub 1k POS.
Thats what my parents did so no one would car when I smashed it. I some how didn't smash it though. Early 90's come to mind. Plenty of Carolas out there.

Well the A6 cost me a thousand bucks about 5 years ago. I brought it back from the dead.

I should correct myself, a slow POS. Mine was a 4tech GM engine. I know if I had my turbo 9-3 or my 2.7t A6 when I was 16-20 I would have gotten in waaaaay to much trouble.
Then again, I bought a moto when I was 18....
