Hello everyone,

My neighbor is selling his Audi A6 4.2 V8 and he said that the hydraulic camshaft tensioner needs to be replaced. He said that the car needs to be started, shutoff, and then started up again for it to run well because of this issue. Is this a common issue with these cars? Where can I find this part online

I'd start by verifying the diagnosis first. If it really is the tensioner, see if it's just a problem with the plastic guides or if it is the whole unit. If you do need a replacement, there are plenty of vendors that support this site who can help.

How can I diagnose the issue? He's pretty good with cars and is positive thats whats wrong. Where can I find this part?

it is likely to be that
sounds like the tensioner isnt pumping up . but i would see if its just the plastic guides though
