Oil leaking from rear output shaft seal on transfer case?
Hi guys, just purchased a 2003 RS6 and after driving it, I seem to have a gear oil leak from the transfer case. Seems to be the output shaft for the driveshaft coming out of the transfer case. Does anyone know if this is an involved job and is it something I should be fearful of? I'll post pictures once I clean her real good!

Been there. If you're talking about the main drive shaft, it has to be dropped using a special jig to avoid damage. Best to do both front and back shaft seals at the same time - the other one will surely start leaking soon.

Just be cautious with the drive shaft. Don't let it hang by the carrier bearing or the joints at either end. Also make sure you mark the position of the carrier bearing before you remove the driveshaft. I've seen drive lines damaged when people use an overhead lift and then let the shaft fall only to be caught by whatever was still connected to the car. You can easily damage the carrier bearing or the joints at either end doing that.
