Is your temperature guage slow or erratic? If so try a new G64 sender. That might cure it. Others have posted about about various codes due to duff signals from the water temperature sender.
I just got back from the dealership 2 hours ago after I scanned my '02 A6 3.0 with my VAG COM with the same code on both banks. They said that the cats are going bad and also got an O2 sensor code which I didn't get on my scan. I don't think it it really is the cats since this code is for in intermittent fault and I have just cleared it in the past, and just passed a state emission test three weeks ago. They told me that they have to clear the code themselves and have it reoccur to give me new cats under warranty. The warranty is 8 years or 80000 miles so you're out of luck there but if they want to give me new cats for free then I'll take them!
Good Luck.

I've been having the same issue. I'm thinking of replacing the current stock parts with awe downpipes (see link).

Code keeps coming back - I'm told it will only get worse as the cats slowly die... since the I'm adding the RS4 clutch kit - now is the time to replace the cats - as it will save on labour.
Anyone else out there happy with awe downpipes?
