Default P0604 Internal Control Module Random Access Memory (RAM) Error

I have a 2002 A6 with the 2.7t engine with about 135k. When I drive with the cruise control on the engine stalls and goes into limp mode. The ABS/traction control/check engine lights come on. When I pulled the codes I got a p0604. It only dies when I use the cruise control and do not have my foot on the accelerator.
What do I need to check?
Do I have a bad ecu?
If a bad ecu can I swap it out without taking it to a shop or dealer?
Thanks for the help.

According to the Bentley manual, the only fix for that code is to replace the ECU.

You may have Immobilizer Generation 2 or Immobilizer Generation 3. In either case, you will need to consider the effects of such when replacing the ECU.

Immobilizer - Ross-Tech Wiki

You may be able to have the ECU repaired. You can google audi ecu repair.

Wow.
I don't think you're going to get too far bumping a 16+ year old post in the wrong forum.
You might want to start a new thread in the correct model/year forum instead.
