Default windshield wiper switch

The Windshield wipers are not turning off as they should when I pull back on the stalk to activate the washer pump. The wipers just keep running for 15 seconds to a minute. Same thing occurs when I pull the switch down for a single wipe.

I assume this means the stalk assembly needs to be replaced. Is this correct? Is this written up somewhere? Or is it not a DIY for an occasional weekender?

It's more likely to be the wiper relay than the switch.

Do the wipers stop if you jiggle the switch? Wiper and turn stalk switches generally tend to fail when they get loose and lose contact. And yes, replacing a turn or wiper stalk is a pretty easy DYI. This writeup is for the turn stalk, but the process is obviously exactly the same for the wiper:

No, wiggling the stalk does not stop the wipers.

Where is the wiper relay? Is it the kind that can be opened and the contacts cleaned?
