Default Customer support is the HUG difference
When you run into issues and problems, Ross-Tech's support for VAG COM is unequaled. Aside from that, I believe that the shareware version of the VAG COM software used for the cheapo eBay versions do not have the same range of functionality as the real deal.

Default I bought the cheapo cable from ebay and registered VAG-COM for $100
The non-registered version really won't do much at all. I think I was able to re-code the window up/down with the remote and that's about it.
