Default Recomemded DOT4 vs DOT 5

What is the real differences? Which one is better in hot/cold or does it matter? And which brand would you recommend?

you should NEVER use DOT 5, since it is silicone based.

Get DOT 4 or DOT 5.1, and as long as it meets Audi specs you should be fine. Do a search of the archive and you'll get plenty of opinions: Valvoline, Pentosin, Castrol...

The actual make of the fluid doesn't make a huge difference, but whatever you do, don't buy DOT 5.

FWIW 5.1 is primarily for racing...I REALLY doubt you'll need that. Stick with DOT 4 and you'll be fine.

But you should SERIOUSLY start learn to use the Search function...since your questions are things that have been covered EXTENSIVELY.

Agreed. I run NAPA heavy duty DOT 4 in everything but the track car.

Depending upon the vintage of the vehilce, Pyro, there's even a different standard for newer cars. They're supposed to run one of the low-vis fluids:

Pentosin seems to be the common one. There are a few others.

I've always used the Valvoline Synthetic Dot 4 and I'm sure anything like that will do. You are usually talking $2 or less more to get the best Dot 4 the store caries, since you will need 1 container in most situation, so I just go with that. Never thought to look at the Napa stuff, will have to check it out.

That's what Im running now. I'm thinking about going to Ravenol I use a lot of parts from blau but I've never used there fluids but supossedly it's all OEM certified. Up in my next changes I may convert to ravenol fluids and see how well they really are.

Please PM Kris Hansen about your problem so you can gain full use of the forum, no one has ever mentioned a problem searching the forums or STF for info.
