STUCK IN 4th GEAR!
I have a 1998 A6 quattro with 203K on the clock. engine still running like a top.
about a week ago my check engine light came on and after reading the codes discovered the the max airflow sensor was malfunctioning along with a couple o2 sensors (banks 1 and 2). the car drove just fine until a coulpe days ago it would not shift up to 5th gear even when doing close to 60mph. the car doesnt seem to be shifting gears even from a dead stop (very slow take offs). Im stuck in 4th!
any ideas what could be causing this problem? any solutions? I cant imagine a could bad o2 sensors could be causing this catastrophic problem! I love my car, please help!

Ideas - that's about it. Have you pulled codes? Power to TCM? When was tranny/fluid last serviced? (this shouldn't cause sudden changes though)
Overall i would begun with codes, there MUST be something, and i would see if a box can communicate with the TCM.
By Max airflow sensor you maybe mean "Mass Airflow Sensor"?
Might the fact that THREE devices showed trouble point to a common problem? Grounding? Power? gremlins in the ECM?

Update: had no choice but to drive the car this morning and she found 5th gear! seemed to be running just fine to me. still curious of what could have caused this though...

Have you ever had the transmission serviced?
It's not unusual for 'stuff' to happen on old ZF transmissions above 100K miles, especially if they haven't had ATF and filter changes every 30-50 miles, notwithstanding whatever Audi says.
