OK, thanks a bunch. I'll get a second opinion and quit shopping for new A6's for the time being.....

Back later. I REALLY appreciate your help....

I found another very reputable mechanic. I sent him link to this string, here's what he thought:

"Usually if there are no codes and no metal in the fluid you can replace the valvebody and take care of this issue."

Make any sense?

If he's talking about anecdotal experience you can take it for what it's worth. Yes, it's likely a solenoid/valve is hanging up but that could also be a function of old funky fluid.

However, I'd still want an objective test…like a vag-com monitor of the transmission during operation before I put in a new valve body. I understand a valve body can be put in without removing the transmission, but it isn't cheap.

I agree with Sloop. I'd want someone to eyeball rather than guess.

Thanks guys. I'll need to reproduce the issue, then drive it to the shop. This has been a total pain in the a$$, but I really appreciate your help.

Last question and I'll shut up - if I can reproduce the issue while the VAG is hooked up, should they be able to pinpoint the exact issue and be able to fix it? It's frustrating because no one has been able to tell me what the issue really is. It's always, "Well, let's try this" or "let's try that".....
