Default Transmission Problem - Update on '99 2.8 Avant Quattro

I've done a search but come up empty. I posted a couple of days ago how my A6's tranny suddenly went into limp mode on Monday without any prior problems. Car has 115,000 miles on the clock and I have never changed the fluid (but have done a lot of reading here on the issue and noted problems from people that had changed it - so I was really in a dilemma as to whether it was better to change it or leave sleeping dogs lie).

Anyway I took it to my indy mechanic yesterday. He called me this morning and said it is throwing two codes, which he doesn't know how to interpret and I'm hoping for some help from some of you folks.

0705 - "Trans Circuit Malfunction"

1857 - "Trans Manufacturer Controller"

Any help would be most appreciated.

Those are the codes he gave me, so I can't answer your question beyond that. I will give him this information and see if it helps. Thanks so much for taking the time to list all of these out!

Default Check the TCU to make sure it isn't swimming.

Under the carpet by the passengers left foot, IIRC.

That's a good suggestion as I have had problems once in a while with Condensor moisture in the passenger foot well. Not often, but its been hot lately (in case no one else has noticed!).

Unless this is the problem I'm probably going to have to take it to the dealer for diagnosis.

Default I'd guess your moisture was a leak at the cowl.

The way the box and drain are designed, it's very difficult for the evaporator condensate to get into the car.

Default Based on this info and the other replies I would...

definitely look for water around the TCU box, under the front passenger footwell. If you ever had the windshield replaced, have had the HVAC air filter changed, or have leaves built up in that under cowl area, I would be suspicious.

Based on the codes with the paste of what looks like the Bentley text, also look at the tranny wiring under the car--the big connector that goes into the front of the tranny (which in turn goes to the valve body internally), as well as the output speed sensor on the passenger side of the tranny pretty far back. Either of those, or a fair number of other wiring or parts gremlins, could throw these kinds of codes and kick you into safe mode. If that is happening constantly, it would be something pretty definitive/broken, like a fried TCU due to water, a bad wire, sensor, connector, etc.

My indy guy pulled the carpet back in the passenger side yesterday and said it was dry as a bone. I dropped the car off at the dealer last night and asked them to see if they can diagnose the problem, so I've got my fingers crossed today.

Default Achtung!!!

Dry under the carpet means nothing. You MUST open the box to make sure the TCU itself is dry. Really.

Default Re: Achtung!!!

Thanks 4Driver. I have conveyed your suggestion to the dealer. They called me just before lunch and said their tech had been working on the car for 2 hours this morning and hadn't identified the problem (at $100/hr) and wanted to know if I wanted them to keep going. Apparently there is a fuse of some sort in the main computer which kept blowing and he was having to back track every electrical circuit until he located where the issue was. Well, I guess I have no real choice but to let them keep looking.
