Interesting that everyone is able to offer suggestions without knowing what the problem is with the current engine. This could be as simple as a handful of valves and some timing chain guides or a bad as a hole in the block.

Early indications are the I may have lucked out, but investigation still ongoing.

There is compression loss, and the first impression is that it maybe the chain has slipped with (hopefully) minimal damage. But still not ruling out valve and/or head work.

And ... of course it's never that simple. Cracked cam girdle, needs a new head. They can't seem to find a pax-side head that's not already on an engine, so they want to drop a "new" engine in it. Two options, 86k w/o replacing chains, or somewhere b/w 103-140k and replacing the chains (at an extra $1200).

Love the car to death, but maybe it's death-do-us-part.

Option e is funny. Well let me know if it's what you eventually choose.

My opinion on this is you should sell the car to whom is interested or part it out, and buy another one. To me, once an old engine is starting having issues, you should get rid of the car because there's also a lot other things that get old/worn and would fail eventually. By the time you are done fixing the engine (which you are not sure would be a success), other issues would arise and you would start regretting putting so much money in it.

Very sorry

Am going with a different engine, but will be doing it myself. I only hope I can get it done before the end of the year.

Been considering the V8 (4.2), but having trouble finding out if I would need any other changes (e.g., trans, diffy, etc.).
