So, in simple terms, if you run the scan & you see that the original software is still in place, you're good to go with the lifeguard 6. Correct?
However, there is some opinion that you can still go to the lifeguard 8 either way.
Is that true too?

Hi dzywicki,
For your 2006 6 speed transmissions that you did the fluid change on, were you replacing the original ZF Lifeguard 6 fluid? I am about to do a drain and change and am planning on going with the Lifeguard 6 because I don't want to pay the dealer to do the software update to switch to the newer Lifeguard . I also believe that if you do this update, I would have replace all of the fluid with the 9 quarts of the new fluid. That would force me to have the dealer power flush the entire transmission. Your approach seems very cost effective.
Thanks for help.

Hi LarryJa,
Software version almost a moot point. If you have original version, you can run 6, 8 or a mix of both. The only benefit of knowing the version would be if you were experiencing many of the problems listed in the TSB for the software upgrade, and you still had the original software, you could have it upgraded.
Hope this helps.

Yes, thanks!
Anyone know the spec/property differences between lifeguard 6&8?
What was the purpose in their developing 8?

I did a VCDS scan & the transmission software code is 0000002 for my HWD trans.
I'd assume that's the original version. So, I'd e buying Lifeguard 6 for my oil & filter change.
Anybody know for certain?

A simple solution to determining what fluid is in my car seems to be to, just, get it jacked up level, warm up the trans a little & pull the fill plug, Then, see what color the fluid is! If the level is too low for any to drain out, I can put my finger in there & see what I get.
Then, I can order a trans filter & oil change kit from Blauparts, be done.
