SOLVED 2008 a6 4.2L cylinder 2 misfire
Hi Everyone,
I just picked up a 2008 a6 4.2L with 70k miles about two months ago. About a week ago the car would shake a bit the first start of the day and I started getting 302 cylinder 2 misfire cel. After reading around the forums, I changed the coil and plug on cylinder 2 which seems to have smoothed the engine out a bit, since it doesn't shake after the first start anymore, but when I accelerate a bit harder, the cel blinks, but doesn't always stay on. When it stays on it's that same cylinder 2 misfire.
Ross Tech has shipped my cable and I should hopefully have it in-hand tomorrow, so I can't supply any readings from VCDS yet. Is there any specific things in VCDS that I should look at when I get it that would be the most helpful?
Also I wanted to see if I'm thinking along the correct lines, after reading various threads of similar issues, for fixing this issue...
1. Some point at the MAF, but would this make sense since it's seemingly only affecting one cylinder?
2. Some point out the injector...maybe it's clogged slightly and lean under load?
3. Saw a thread about an Ignition Control Module(ICM) to test the resistance, but I'm having troubles finding it and I don't see a mention of it the the Bentley manual for the car. Any advice on where it might be other that following wires which are all encased in looms?
4. Saw many threads about carbon buildup on the 3.2L engines...does this affect the 4.2L as well?
Thanks in advance for any helpful information you are willing to provide!

I would also recommend changing out some of the coil packs with another one that you feel is 'good'. Lastly, your year (08) model of 4.2 is an FSI therefore, yes it is susceptible to carbon build-up.

raj99, thanks for giving me some feedback!
This weekend I changed all the spark plugs and coil packs, including a new set in cylinder 2 which i had previously changed, since I had no real maintenance history of the car. Reset all codes and drove around. Seemed fine for the first test run, then later after the car cooled off and I drove again the MIL and EPC indicators came on. The EPC indicator seems to go away after shutting down and restarting the car (kind of like most microsoft o.s.) and doesn't seem to return until the first start of the day or after the car has sat for many hours.
Here's the latest scan, any ideas would be highly appreciated.

I pulled the connector to the MAF sensor and the engine ran no differently. I changed the fuel filter because I didn't know the history of the vehicle and had run the tank down pretty far several times, but it didn't make a difference.
The P0300 (Random Misfire) and P0302 (Cylinder 2 Misfire) I get frequently, but only when I accelerate harder...if I keep the lead foot at bay, the codes stay away. I haven't seen the P0330(Knock Sensor 2) return.
This weekend, while I change the oil and air filter, I'm thinking about trying a couple things.
1. Soaking the MAF in alcohol to clean it, then putting it back in after it's dry.
2. Using a party fog machine to smoke the vacuum lines to check for a leak.
Anything else that I should try?
I'm getting frustrated with this car...and I've worked on my own vehicles for the last 20+ years. So far the Bently repair manual seems to be far inferior to the Helms manuals that many other brands use.

Soaking the MAF didn't help...or hurt. I'm running out of things to try...tomorrow for the smoke test.
Is there a List of Measure Blocks in the Bentley manual? I'm poking around but haven't found one yet.

Most cylinders had some buildup, but #8 was the worst by far. The valves on #2 were actually amongst the cleanest.
The manifold gasket and cleaning have smoothed out the motor for the most part, but I'm still getting the P0300 and P0302 on the vag com. The other thing I'm still seeing is occasionally on the first startup of the day, the car runs a little rougher and it shows the EPC warning on the instruments. If I restart the car it runs fine. I'm thinking this must be an electronics issue (sensor, ground, etc) and not mechanical since it's intermittent.

I had my vag com with me when the EPC light went on this time. Here's the scan.
The engine codes I see regularly, but not the Can Gateway errors. Maybe they clear when I restart the car after the EPC warning shows up? Any advice for finding the cause of these codes?

Similar Issue: MY08 C6 A6 4.2 w/ 80K+
Had similar ongoing issues mid-summer.
Started with a mild vibration at idle, then finally it threw a CL with misfires on I believe it was 3, 5, 6. Dealer first replaced all injectors and said they did a cleaning for some carbon build-up. Ran fine for about a week or so, still could feel the vibration at idle.
CL ended up coming on again, this time for misfire on cylinder 2. Dealer took a look and said the intake manifold was leaking... awesome. Replaced the manifold, ran fine for another couple days then CL came on once again.
This time, along with the vibration at idle, it was having issues accelerating... took it back and Dealer switched out the fuel filter. Lo and behold, no more vibration at idle, acceleration came back and all was good.
Hope this may help.
