Today I was driving on the highway in my 2006 A6 3.2 quattro and all of a sudden it just shut off on me three hours into my trip. I was halfway up a bridge and no emergency lane to pull over to. I was almost rearended by a few cars and trucks. I stopped shut the car off and it started up right away and no problems the rest of the trip (about an hour drive). This is the first time it ever did this and I know a few people had these problems from reading previous posts but I couldn't find the cause. Please help I usually drive long distances for work and can't afford to be standed on the road. Thanks

Glad you avoided any accidents. First thing i would do is get it checked out for any error codes that will likely point to the problem.

Thanks so am I. Although there is no MIL light on do you think an error code could still be there without the light?

Well i've been doing some research and thinking about this problem. I think I have narrowed this down to a fuel related issue. Either it's a bad fuel pump, filter or relay. I am leaning towards the relay as the symptoms I found on the net are identical what I was experiencing. Here is a description of a bad relay symptoms.

A faulty fuel pump relay can cause the car to come to a complete stop while driving. This will not be instant, but it may resemble what happens when a car runs out of gas. The vehicle will gradually slow to a stop and the engine will refuse to come back on for a time.

This is exactly what happened to me. It's not an expensive part to change
and hopefully it will fix the problem

Okay here is an update.

I've bought a new fuel pump relay from the dealership. I measured the resisteance at the NC poles on the new relay found around 3000ohm. When I removed the old one from the car it only read 200ohms so definately it was bad. The car feels totaly different. It idles smoother and the power is amazing. Before it was sluggish at times and little rough at idle specially when cold. I never payed attention to it as I thought it was normal. So if someone is having similar symptoms checking the relay might
be a good start.

It's not to hard to replace located under the hood by the driver side fuse box under the windshield. Taking and putting the fuse box cover is the hardest part of all
