Picking up on this thread as I am buying same Thule components for a 2006 A6 Avant. What does the Thule Fit Kit actually do?

I think it is the piece that clamps the feet to the roof rail.

Correct. It's the 4 feet that allow any Thule Mounts/Bars to fit to specific rails on different automobile models. 4001 is for C6 A6 Avants. I have the Aeroblade Edge setup with 4001 feet and they are very secure.

I have the same setup. Looks very sexy and very secure. Thule has best aero bars, while a Rocky Mounts has the best bike trays. All compatible
