Default Advice on 05 3.2 A6 Quattro

Hello!

I am in the market for a car and a buddy offered to sell his 05 3.2 Quattro for a really good price. The mileage is at 89,000 miles and has followed the maintenance schedule perfectly. The car has not had any issues to this point. Ive been researching issues on this forum and I am a bit worried about the car as it approaches the 100k mark. Do you recommend any preventative work at this point, like replacing the chain tensioners? Thank you and I really appreciate any advice or thoughts!

If you search the forum you will find all the answers you would need your question is the most asked among new members here. But to sum it all up @90k any audi will need work to keep it on the road and its alittle more than other non german cars....carfax or dealer records will show you only what was done on the car before but but in order to know the condition of the car now is impossible untill you an audi mechanic looks at it....at this mileage always stuff will always...my first a6 c6 cost me 8k in the first 9 mos of ownership between service, decarbon, minor leaks, suspension work always ......make sure all control arm bushings ,struts and shocks working fine these guys are expensive too its not only the engine and tensioners that go bad

I don't have any prior history for my car other than coilpacks under warranty, but I took delivery of mine at 105k and now I'm at 125k. In those 20k miles I replaced the chains and tensioners at 112k. Otherwise, I've had no issues other than scheduled maintenance. I did replace the sway bar end links a few hundred miles ago and that was only 40 bucks but other suspension parts look fine. Otherwise it's never let me down.
ABS module, now, does need to be rebuilt but that's only around 400 and 500 bucks. But as with all German vehicles, make sure you have cash for the day that the car decides it needs thousands in work.

I own a '05 A6 3.2 Quattro that I've had since '08. It currently has about 80k miles on it. Aside from routine maintenance, the only non-routine items that have been replaced are a couple of upper control arms and a leaky brake caliper.

Just curious why you had to change your tensioners at only 112k. They generally last the life of the car from what I've been reading, although once in a great while they may need to be replaced.

Honestly, they probably didn't need to be replaced (one of the tensioners was completely shot though). I just did it as more of a precaution than anything else really. At the end of the day, the car was having some weird intermittent start issues and I took it in to have the chains replaced since I was having symptoms akin to failing chains/guides/tensioners. But after the job was done the guy said that the drivers side tensioner was the one that was completely shot and provided no tension at all.
