Front Brakes
Two weeks ago the brake pad warning light came on so it was time to attack the front brakes. I sourced some new pads (Brembo Ceramics) and rotors (Zimmerman plated) from EMI Autoparts in Clinton, CT. The thickness on the original rotors was right at 28 mm (the minimum) at 96,000 miles. The pads were replaced when I bought the car CPO'd at 43,000. 53,000 miles on a set of front pads is pretty good wear.
R&R on the first side took a couple of hours, including taking a trip to pick up a 21 mm socket to remove the caliper carrier (the only size I did not have in a 6 point and with the need to tighten to 145 lb•ft I did not want to use a 12 point). I took it slow to make sure I got it right. The second side took less than 40 minutes.
I want to thank 4Dr1ver4 for reminding me of the importance of large hammers when working on Audi's. Each rotor took exactly 5 hard hits on the center hat to pop them loose.
The new pads are not as grabby as the OEM pads, which is what I wanted, the wife always complained they were too touchy. It will be interesting to see how long they last. I am also looking forward to less brake dust.
