Default How to Replace 2008 A6 4.2 Headlight Bulbs

I can't for the life of me, identify how to replace the headlight bulbs (High beam and Low beam) on my A6. The ballasts are completely covered by the front fenders. After a deep search on Google, I managed to locate a diagram to for the bumper assembly. It states that I need to remove my bumper in order to access the ballasts. Is this true? Are there any workarounds?

At the shop I was told they removed the breather above the light assembly to replace my light. Looking I have found that they state that the bumper needs to be removed and this is why I went to the shop.

It's actually not that bad. There are at least 2 threads on here explaining it, one started by me.

This is the procedure for a 3.2. It is probably similar.

It's not too bad. The PDF gives good instructions but for the left side, you will need to be a contortionist to do it as there is very little space to work. Aligning the bulb is also important - you may end up with high beams instead of low beams. It's like that on mine after I changed it but I do not dare to open it up again.

When I replaced the bulbs and wrote those instructions there was no alignment required. The bulb went in and the retaining clips held it firmly in the correct position.

Thank you SchwarzS6. Your procedure was perfect. I purchased a pair of D2S bulbs for $40CAD. Replaced them with great success and they look fabulous @ 6000K color temp.

I must say I was fairly nervous doing this procedure, things are pretty tight in there.

I was unable to figure out how to take out the DRL bulbs. I would have loved to change them out to dark yellow or cool white. I'll wait for the next time around.

Now the only thing I need to do is to reset the the headlight warning on the dash.

I'm gonna head over to my buddies and do a VCDS reset using the Vagcom.

Cheers!

Default DIYers Can Do This

This was extremely helpful. Thank you. One thing to add: on the Driver Side bulb change (the easy one) keep a hold of the bulb compartment door as you unclip it and pull up to remove it. I lost mine and had to have my 8 yr, old daughter reach down to pull it out, my arm wouldn't fit. This procedure worked fine for the 2008 Audi A6 4.2L V8. I decided not to do both sides at the same time as only one bulb was out. The bulb shouldn't need any aiming, if it is sitting in the socket properly. Thanks again to SchwarzS6 for creating the procedure.
