Default MMI **** Replacement

Looking at puchasing an 06 A6 with crappy ****. Is this easy to replace? Is it just a tug? Where is best place to get replacement and how much?

Thanks,

Mine broke off in my pervious '05 ... dealer swapped out the whole unit. Took 4 days.. suffered the indignity of driving a base A4.

Broke again (my fault) - super glued it. Never an issue again.

Just depends on 'where' it's broken and how badly... sure you can tell the difference between dealer visit and home repair.

the know in my 2005 was broken when I bought it last year. I purchased a new one from genuinevwaudiparts.com. I then took a pair of adjustable pump pliers and pulled the old one off (put some rags on teh console so I wouldn't scratch it). The new one pops back on with a little pressure. there is a snap-type ring that holds it in place. very easy to do, if it is just the ****.

yeah Danno6 is totally right about how to remove it.. if the spring is missing or part of the reason it's loose (assuming that's the problem) then you can line it up and use a dab of super glue...

It's really a pretty simple fix once you see what's involved.

Default Use a two part clear epoxy

Like he says, cover the console so you don't drip.
It will work just fine and you won't need to worry about it going bad ever again.

If you search the archive you will find the same issue with a resolution described in much greater detail.

Does anyone have a part number for the ****? because I am in need of one badly. in a drunken night it broke and the cover of the **** keeps coming off. kinda annoying when you drive an hour to work.

i would have guessed the **** didn't have its own part #...maybe it does... i bet the dealers try to get everyone to replace whole mmi unit.

my main button works just fine but is peeling a bit... my power on/power off/volume button is flaky... it sometimes doesn't power off when depressed down... i have learned to do a funky lean to one angle then press down and that works 80% of the time.. i pulled it straight up and off once and looked to see if i could finagle something but i couldn't.. i have minor sticky buttons issue when its cold ...maybe ill replace it if some thing major developes but for now ill live w it

Not willing to pay the $75? I drilled a hole in a brass rod to fit the center stem. Tapered the bottom so there was plenty of movement. Works just fine. Will try it out for a week and if so I will place some loctight to fix it in place. Might consider changing to an aluminum rod.
