Default MMI Problems - Acts sluggish and sound cuts out...

I started having problems with my 2G MMI on my 2007 A6 yesterday. I updated the firmware to 4610 and started using a new NAV DVD back in Nov '13 and installed an OEM AMI unit in Jan '14. Haven't had any problems since either of those changes. Below is a list of symptoms I am experiencing:
  • Overall, the system is very sluggish.
  • It takes several seconds for the rearview camera screen to display
  • Experiencing a lag in response to volume changes, screen changes, scrolling, etc.
  • Screens take several seconds to display information
  • No matter what source I have selected, the sounds cuts out (on average) more than once per minute for a few seconds

I've rebooted the MMI system several times with no improvement. I have not disconnected the battery for any length of time to see if that helps.

Just wondering if any of you have experienced similar problems. If so, did you find a solution?

hey JB

did the lag start occurring immediately after you updated the MMI to 4610? If not, was there any other issue which occurred and are there any vag details which call out any anomalies?

No, it did not start right after the MMI update. I hooked up my vag-com, but didn't see any codes for the MMI, but I think I'll run a complete scan tonight.

Ran an auto scan on all modules. Here are the results filtered to only ones that don't say "No fault code found".

Two modules say "00384 - Optical Databus 011 - Open Circuit - Intermittent". I wonder if the fiber optic connection came loose behind the AMI I installed a couple of months ago? I'll have to check that tonight. Any other ideas?

This probably confirms my thought on a bad fiber optic (MOST) connection.

The optical databus open circuit faults will be the cause of your issue. I would recheck your retrofitted ami unit to make sure there are no right angle bends in the fibre optical cables. This prevents the light from travelling along the cable.
Otherwise one the control modules on the fibre optic cables has failed ( i.e phone, c.d, satnav, amp). When one of these fails electrically it pulls the whole system down and symptoms such as yours are common.

+1 on the above...check your connections THOROUGLY. try not to have too many sharp corners and ensure everything is plugged in VERY well.

Got home and checked the MOST connection on the back of the AMI. It was seated properly, but I unplugged it and then plugged it back in to make sure. Turned on the car to check...no improvement.

Ran the Optical Bus Diagnostic tool on VCDS. Below are the results. Looks like I have a problem (possibly electrical) with the telephone module. Now to find where it is located. Anybody got any ideas?

The telephone transceiver R36 is beneath floor carpet in drivers footwell. Did you check if you have water under the carpet??? If you lift both seat, there a black plastic cap hiding the electrical wire for your seat. Lift it from behind and remove it. Don't unplung the front connection. Just put your finger where you can and try to feel if there any water in there. If you want to access the bluetooth module, you have to remove the driver seat and trim around the door. Lift the carpet and there a black box under. That the bluetooth module. Water on the floor is one problem to ours cars... There two drain under the trim coming from the rad in front of the cabin air filter that could leak. Drain from the fan under the plenum chamber too can be problematic and all 4 from the sunroof can leak too.

Well, the carpets weren't wet, but I didn't poke my finger through that opening for the wires either. I'll check this evening. I'm surprised that the BT module isn't in a water tight enclosure...especially since it's in such a low spot in the cabin. hmm.
