This pic is from a 2008 A6. Did Audi really have a monochrome DIS in 2008??

yep they sure did, as part of the MMI basic package. It must be an early 08. Here's a breakdown of the MMIs:

MMI 2G Basic
- No SD card slot
- vehicle contains a red monochrome center screen
- In-dash 6 disc CD changer with separate DVD drive in the trunk for navigation

MMI 2G High
- No SD card slot
- In dash 6 disc CD changer with separate DVD drive in the trunk for navigation
- contains a color center screen
- No "joystick" on MMI control ****

MMI 3G low
- Dual SD card slot
- In dash single DVD drive for navigation or music. No CD changer
- 7" low resolution screen
- No "joystick" on MMI control ****

MMI 3G plus or high
- Dual SD card slot
- In dash single DVD drive for music and DVD video
- 7" high resolution screen (800x480)
- "Joystick" on MMI control ****

I'm pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that you got a monochrome display if the car didn't come with navigation from the factory. My 05 has the monochrome, and I saw a pic someone posted elsewhere of an 05 or 06 with the color display, showing that it had factory navigation.

Mine didn't come with nav from the factory, I added it. I would like to have color but the monochrome works just fine.

Yes, our '06 A6 came with Navi from the factory and came with a color DIS. That's why I was surprised to see the red DIS on an '08 (correct, it was not factory NAV).

Actually, it appears to be a 2G basic, since the vehicle contains a red monochrome center screen vs. color.

Personally, I've only ever seen one 2G basic and it didn't even have Nav. So the fact the picture you showed appears to have Nav and is red...it's rare for sure, but perhaps not in a good way

Well, the Navigation screen is color. Just the DIS is red. So I believe it's a MMI High 2g: FISCON Bluetooth Freisprecheinrichtung
