Default Question on Mobil 1 Formula M 5W-40

I am using Mobil 1 Formula M 5w-40 as I get it cheaper like $6 per quart from the Mercedes dealer, they are good friends of mine.
I have been using in my 2005 Audi A6 3.2 Quattro for the past 2 years.
I did not know that the oil needs to meet VW502 etc.as it does not say that on the bottle.
Is it OK to use this or shell out more money to use Castrol?

You should only use oil that meets the VW 502.000 or newer VW standard (e.g., 505.000). Mobiil 1 0W-40 Euro oil does meet this standard. Not using an oil specified for your engine will eventually cause sludge build-up, which will cost a lot more $$$$s than using the correct oil.

OK, actually regular Mobil 1 5W-40 is VW502 approved but Mobil 1 Formula M 5W-40 does not show VW502 approved. When I looked at the difference, Formula M is a modified to reduce sludge buildup, has more cleaning additives, etc.
But I agree that I will find Castrol Synthetic 5W-40, exceot here in San Antonio, I cannot easily find it cheaper, like walmart etc. Most of the auto chains want like +$9.00 per quart.
Thks

Have you checked your local WalMart for 0w40 since mine carries it in the gallon container and at a very reasonable price

The oil from the Mercedes dealer is similar to the newer VAG 504/507 standard. There wouldn't be any concerns about using it in an out-of-warranty Audi.

I think W*mart is selling Castrol's 0W40 and that one meets the VAG 502.00 standard plus other mfr specs. They'd also have the M1 0W40, 5qts/$24.

Actually, I have a friend at VW dealer, bought 4 cases of Castrol Edge 5W-40 at $6.26 quart. Not bad. So, will use this oil from now onwards.
Cant believe Advance Auto, Oreilly, Autozone are at $9.20 per quart.

I've always been a fan of Shell Rotella T6 5w40 Fully Synthetic in my BMW's. Is it still going to be a good choice for my A6 now?

The oil has to be VAG approved. Mobil 1 is the worst in building sludge is these cars, whether it's the engine heat, the oil content, or whatever breaks it down. Take it as you wish but my local indy calls it jell-o 1. Personally I though that it didn't make much difference, if you had regular, early changes, but after seeing a few pictures of religiously maintained cars covered in sludge from Mobil 1, I will stay away from it.

I agree better off to use what meets the spec if one is going to keep the Audi.
In my case, I am planning to keep the Audi and have invested money into it
and love the car. So, why take a chance.
