With your symptoms I think the carbon cleaning will fix it. Especially if it's never been done before.
not sure about that OP told that sometimes car run just fine. If there is carbon buildup in my understanding it is slowly building up and stay permanently it just can't get on and off every other day...???

Sooo.. two weeks after getting my 2007 A6 back from the dealer for intake valve cleaning, I had the same intermittent issue w/ CEL come back. I barely made it home and sure enough, a few hours later, it drove fine.

So far, my indy mechanic can't figure it out, the dealer can't figure it out.. I am at my wit's end with this. Any thoughts?

Here are the two intermittent codes that popped BEFORE I brought the car to the dealer. I will bring it to my indy mechanic on Monday and have him run codes again. Sorry but I don't have an electronic output of the codes that I can copy/paste.

009217 - EVAP Leak Detection Pump Control Circuit
P2401-007 - Short to GND - Intermittent
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 001000010
Fault Priority: 4
Fault Frequency: 8
Reset Counter 37
Mileage: 53369 km

008201 - Intake Manifold Flap; Bank 1
P2009 - 007 - Short to Ground - Intermittent
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00000010
Fault Priority: 4
[rest got cut off]

To follow up, in case it helps someone.. it's been just over 2 weeks after my mechanic tried his final attempt to fix my car. He replaced one (or two) power relays which he thought were bad. Car starts fine every time so far (knock on wood).

Do you know which relays he replaced, and where they are located?

I don't but I'll ask him when I drop off my wife's car for servicing next week.
