Default Shattered Sunroof Glass

Caught a rock on the highway shattering my sunroof glass on the 2005 Audi a6. Is this a take it to the dealer repair or can any auto glass company do the repair? The cost is covered by insurance but have to drive 90 miles to the nearest dealer. The regular glass companies can't get the OEM Audi glass. Is the OEM glass part necessary for a perfect fit? Thank you in advance if anyone has some information on the post.

Most reputable non-OEM glass companies, e.g., Safelite, etc., can probably replace the sunroof glass. Audi OEM glass is manufactured by one of the glass manufacturers that also make the windshield and side window glass, such a Pinkerton, and that also make replacement glass sold by the glass shops. What really matters is if the particular shop has any experience in replacing a sunroof glass in an Audi. I would suggest discussing with one or more of the glass shops near you to find out 1) what brand of glass they would replace it with, and 2) do they have any experience in replacing that glass part in an Audi. Note that dealers also use glass shops to replace their "OEM" glass.

I would personally recommend genuine Audi for a perfect fit. If you can't afford a new one, look for used parts. Here's one from eBay for 110 bucks. There may be cheaper ones if you do a thorough search. http://www.ebay.com/itm/AUDI-2005-2006-2007-2008-A6-C6-SUNROOF-MOON-ROOF-SUN-ROOF-GLASS-window-/152179699547?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368

Thank you and Yes. Auto Glass company ordered a new OEM unit from the dealer. They didn't know if a knockoff was available for an Audi and wouldn't install it if it was.

The OEM sunroof glass has to come from Germany, takes 14 days, and costs $850 from the local Audi dealership. Installation is additional. Good thing I have free glass replacement with my insurance policy.
