Default Timing chain noise

I have a 2005 a6 3.2 and I just started to notice a squealing sound coming from the engine compartment. The noise worried me so I took the car to an audi dealership to have it looked at. They told me that it was the timing chain and that all chain driven 3.2's make that noise. I don't believe that a car company could sell a product that makes this unpleasant of a sound. Does anyone know if this is true? If it isn't what could be the problem?

By the way the car has 48000 miles and a clean history.

Post a video of the noise and let us hear it. Also a vcds scan to reveal any issues specifically for the chain adjustment would be helpful

Yes they do make that noise. I was also worried by mine when I first bought it. The car's hood usually keeps the noise down. From the cabin or the back outside, you wouldn't hear it but if you get close to the engine outside, you would hear it a bit.

Still, post a video of the noise like raj99 said. We can compare and let you know if yours is normal or not. For a 48,000 miles car with a clean history you should normally be fine, but you never know.

How long have you owned the car? Is it a new noise? If it is a new noise then the claim that they all make that noise is probably wrong. I agree with raj, post a clip so that we can hear the noise. I had the timing chain rattle on my 4.2 and I would not have described it as a squeal.

I've own the car for only a couple of weeks. I didn't really notice it until I had it for a few days.

Your engine looks really clean. Hard to believe that one of the timing chain tensioners would be going out. You could also take a mechanic's stethoscope and place in the rear chain cover to pinpoint the noise. From previous posts, I suggest checking the driver's side as that side seems to go bad more often.

That doesn't sound like your typical "timing chain rattle", however that doesn't sound right either. As you mentioned it does sound like a drill of sorts...now I know the injectors make quite a bit of noise and when I listened to what you have vs. my V8 it didn't sound similar.

An easier comparison for you might to simply go to your local dealer, ask to see a 3.2 engine vehicle (i.e. C6, Q5, etc...) and start both yours and the other vehicle up and see if there is an noticeable difference in engine noise.

If you had a vag cable, you could measure the offset of the chains and if they are at 0 or out of tolerance, and by how much.

Please explain how to measure the offset of the chains with vag software.

FWIW, Block 93 measures the crankshaft degrees advancement on camshafts. Ideally, you want this to be very close to "0" on both.

Are you saying you noticed an engine noise change or you started paying attention only recently?

It sounds normal to me, given the fact that the recorders usually make engine noise sound different in a bad way. I believe you should not worry about this like your local dealer says. Start to worry only if the current noise changes. Mine sounds just like that.
