I hate to high jack a thread, but engine noises seem to be a common, & worthwhile, concern among newbie C6 owners. & mine seems imediate!
Last night, getting out of work, I noticed a low level "diesel" sound from my engine, a little after I started it up. I opened the hood & listened. It came from the rear of the engine & went away after less than a minute.
I listened, again, this morning & same thing.
Sounds like I'll be spending about $600 for parts & tools, as well as a couple days doing the upper tensioner replacements.
I guess my real question is, "Typically, how long before it'll get worse & pitch a code?".

Are you saying you noticed an engine noise change or you started paying attention only recently?
It sounds normal to me, given the fact that the recorders usually make engine noise sound different in a bad way. I believe you should not worry about this like your local dealer says. Start to worry only if the current noise changes. Mine sounds just like that.

I just went out & did another cold start. The clacking noise is there on start up. It goes away after a minute or two. Then, if you rev the engine, a little, it'll come back for a minute or two.
It sort of sounds like a bad water pump on an old engine, except it's not on the front of the engine.
But, no codes showing, yet...
Arrrrrg!!!!

Well, I got my VCDS block 93 readings today:
position I1 I2 E1 E2
Cold@idle 0.4 6.0 3.0 1.1
Hot@idle -0.4 5.6 2.3 0.8
Hot@3Krpm 0 6.0 2.6 1.1
That's the long & short of it. Not too bad, but not too good...
This gives me a baseline@153K miles. Bank 2 is not faring too well but, now, I can watch it.
I think the noises, that were originally concerning to me, were the engine's characteristic to speed up to an 1300rpm idle(in neutral) for a minute or two when cold, after it's running about 20 seconds. As soon as you put it into D or R, the electronics take it right back down to a 900rpm idle. On my car, 1300rpm cold idle is a lot noisier than 900rpm. That noise raised my cautious concerns.
Anyway, I'm going to start eBay shopping for the tools to change the top tensioners now, & monitor these readings. I can buy the tools, put them on a shop shelf, & be ready.

I have all the tools to do the 3.2 upper tensioners. I should be done with them in about a week, and then I'll let you know.... I'm sure we could work out something.
