It's an HLK 6HP19 transmission which seems to take Lifeguard 6. I'm not sure I've even seen Lifeguard 6+ fluid. What determine the difference needing 6 vs. 6+?

There are several 6HP19 models and I believe you have a 6HP19A. If you look at the TE-MIL-11 there is a Note(2) next to the 6HP19A that talks to the different types of differentials Split/Common. Im like you dont know how to figure that out or even what the heck it means but evidently there is also another set of fluid specs to figure out for the diff once you finally figure out what Trans you have. WTF!!! Also as far as LG6,6+, or 8, As far as I can determine from a VW forum I read there was a program update to fix a problem that also necessitated change in fluid So if your trans has the old program you would use LG6 if it has the new program flashed you would use the 6+ or 8 fluid. Good idea to consolidate all this into one thread cause now its all over the place. I would like to see something less fragmented. One ppoint I have reached is to go ahead and use the LG fluids they can be found for about $200 for 12 Ltrs And it seems that while many other cheaper brands meet the specs it Cof or viscosity the difference is in the additives which I believe are prob propriatory so youre not going to get the same fluid vers design compatibility from say like a Castrol as u would from ZF. The Additives are what make the difference. IE the program change mentioned above... same fluid basically but different additives which change the preformance to match the program.

My VAGCOM is coming tomorrow so I can officially check the trans software version. I checked with The Google for Lifeguard 6+ and did not come up with any results. WTF?

My A6 is a 2005 and included dealer servicing and it has a complete service history si I'll stop in and ask the dealer if my transmission software was updated or not.

Makes me miss my "analog" british sports cars.

All I did was give my local Audi guys my VIN, and they very quickly told me which transmission fluid I needed. Simple.

I then bought the fluid, filter, and gasket, and with the vag-com did the work.

Blau has a writeup as well: http://www.blauparts.com/audi/audi_f...on_fluid.shtml

Good luck

Got my VAGCOM today and ran a complete scan. Glad I was able to have it run on a Mac in a windows virtual machine. I'm assuming I do not have a transmission software update. Here is the info:

Address 02: Auto Trans Labels: 09L-927-760.lbl
Part No SW: 4F1 910 156 H HW: 09L 927 156
Component: AG6 09L 3.2 FSI USA 0020
Revision: --H01--- Serial number: 0052836
Coding: 0001002
Shop #: WSC 02327 785 00200
VCID: 295923F2801B2550562

Was the software update necessary or was it to solve a particular symptom?

Got the oil, filter, air filter and plugs changed last week. Now onto the trans fluid, differentials ans transfer case.

For the differentials and transfer case, I seem to be finding conflicting information:

Amsoil's application chart shows:
Differential - Rear - GL-5
Differential - Front - GL - 4
Transfer case - GL-4

Other threads are showing:
Center Transferbox P/N: G 055 145 A2 (1L bottle) (fill amount 0,5L)
Front final drive P/N: G 052 145 S2 (1L-bottle) or G 052 145 A1 (0,5L bottle) (fill amount: 1.1L)
Rear Diff (same oil as Front) (fill amount 1,5L)

I'm also seeing info that says for the automatic/tipotronic, you can use GL-5 in all 3.

GL-5 in the rear and GL-4 in the front and transfer case is what makes sense to me. From my understanding, the Gl-5 would be ok too, you jsut don't want to use the GL-5 in a manual box because of the brass synchros.

Those mentioned by me are taken from Audis own part manual and workshop system..so I would trust them :-)

yes your's has been updated, the 0020 after USA is the software version, for all the 3.2's software 0010 is the original, anything else means it's been updated

Thanks for that clarification. I was looking at the revision (H1). So that means I need Lifeguard 6+ fluid right? Since this had the update, that must mean the fluid was flushed was replaced with the "Blue" fluid. The car serviced at a dealer fairly close by. Hopefully, they can tell me when the car was updated and when the fluid was changed. Maybe I don't need to deal with it for awhile.
I'm still planning on doing the diffs and transfer case.

I was confused about the Lifeguard 6+ fluid so I sent a question the thectsc.com support email and got the following reply:

LifeGuard 6+ is no longer sold by ZF, LifeGuard 8 is its replacement.
Especially if you have the transmission software updated there is no issue.
We have not put together Audi fluid change kits as of yet.

Best regards
Klaus

A little less murky I suppose.
