Default Oil drain plug

I have a 2006 A6 Quattro with the 3.2.
Was always dealer maintained.
I now do my own oil changes and noticed that the oil drain plug has no gasket/washer.
The plug seems extremely light and most likely made of aluminum. It has both an internal Torx and external hex head.
I have changed my oil 4 times now without a gasket/washer and never a drop of oil from the plug.
So, no gasket or should there be a gasket?
I have been tightening it to about 20 ft lbs.

Thanks!

hi typhoon,

I'm almost certain that it has a washer, but I can't be certain since awhile back I installed a Fumoto Qwikvalve and could not be happier. My oil changes went from taking over hour to less than 10 minutes!!

There should be a washer. Audi changed washer and plug type at some point .. don't recall exactly when. If you have internal torx like this:

The crush washer is this:

If it is not leaking, you are lucky is all I can say. Crush washers are cheap.

Per ETKA 7 for 2006 A6 3.2L, the crankcase drain plug included the seal up thru VIN 4F-6-190 000. From VIN 4F-6-190 001, the seal was separate.

My plug does not look like that. It has BOTH internal Torx and external hex. It is made of aluminum and the plug is horizontal; points to the passenger side. I do recall the dealer telling me there is no washer on this type of plug, but I am wondering.
If it should have a washer can someone give me a part number for this type of plug?
Thanks!

That other one looks like it's from the 4.2? But my 3.2 A6 had same type of plug as typhoon1's with NO washer and I did not have any leaks. But double check with your service dept if no luck here

you're correct Mike...the one with the hex key looks like my old plug, and I have a 4.2. I've never seen a plug like the one in the pic and especially not one within a crush washer...but then again I don't have a 3.2.

Perhaps some 3.2 folks can chime in on the thread?
