2007 S6/A6 electric steering column broken!!
Hey guys,
got my 2007 S6 with only 40k miles on it. Its my wknd driver and the other day my electric adjustable steering column failed!! It moves in and out but doesnt go up and down anymore. Even with the memory function. Now its stuck in the up position making it a crappy driving experience.
Dealer says the column is not serviceable and the part with motors and the control module is 1600 plus 600 for installation! WTF! I hardly use the adjust function and its already broken.
Any suggestions to further diagnose or fix? I know the switch isnt bad. How to I remove that lower dash cowling?
Any help would be appreciated!

Do you have a vag-com? Since that would be the default start...
Basic Setting
Steering Column Adjustment
Prerequisites:
Steering Column or the Central Electronics Control Module (J519) have been replaced.
Approach all 4 end positions (up, down, forward, back).
[Select]
[09 - Central Electronics]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 001
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]
The adjustment should now be learned.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]
And that should be it
You posted on audizine as well, so try that vagcom adjustments to start with. However the steering column has known to fail on these cars and its usually not a cheap fix

Thanks for the email. I havent really played around with my car, but where is a good place to get a decent priced vagcom? I heard they are pretty exp. I found some ones on ebay, but not sure which one to get as there are different brands. Any suggestions? I guess starting there would be cheaper than bringing it to the dealer. Thanks

Hi,
Remember the adage, you get what you pay for.
Well you rarely get good & cheap. So if you are looking for a full supported product, the only choice is Ross-Tech, which is the cable I have
http://store.ross-tech.com/shop/cat/VCDS.html
However, if you are looking for a partially supported product, the ebay Chinese made cables are an option. But bear in mind, these are no fully supported and do not allow for all functionality...it really is 'hit & miss'. I have no idea if the ability to reset the steering column is supported by the Chinese made stuff.
FWIW, I've 'paid' for my cable 5x over, with not only my car, but helping others and the like.

You should stick with a Ross Tech Cable.
But if you want to go a cheaper route try this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/321112645526...84.m1497.l2649
You'll need to download the free software from easyOBD2 and if you like get it then get the full version.
I bought one for my other car it works. I also try on A6 but didn't play around with because I was in a rush. It works.
But the Ross Tech cable should be your first choice.
