chain tensioner on 3.0 TFSI
Hey Guys,
I have this weird sound when I start up the engine, kind of a metal to metal sound for the first second or two. While I checked on internet, it looks like a well known "cosmetic" issue of all preface 3.0 TFSI engines and should not do any harm. is there someone who was dealing with it? happens only when the engine is cold, so I thought it would stop during summer, but so far it still happens
at audi dealer, they said we could try to change the tensioners for the newer generation, but the price is around 4500 euros!! bacause the trans has to go out as well as the engine (so most of the price is because of the work price, around 40 hours of work)
I have a 2011 my

It isn't a fault, assuming your Audi dealer diagnosed it correctly.
The top chain tensioners on each bank rattle on start up, some more than others. They changed the design to quieter ones around late 2013 (production date), as you noted.
In the US (and I think the US only), they did issue the TSB below. I assume this may have been for people who complained very loudly. I don't know of any other market that would treat this as a warranty claim, or issued a TSB for it.
Regardless, I assume your car is out of warranty. It would seem excessive to spend €4500 on this 3 second "cosmetic" improvement, but maybe it is driving you crazy? I think you will struggle to find anyone that has paid to have this update to new upper tensioners done.
Unfortunately, the TSB does not list the specific labour units required, nor whether the transmission REALLY needs to be removed. I also suspect your dealer has never done this before.

thanks for the reply! Dealer said they did it a few times, but as my engine was warm at the time I was there, we were not able to test it if its the tensioner. But according to the description, it pretty much looks like it.
mine is my2011, so out of warranty already but anyway, the TSBis only in US, so we are screwed here in EU..
the mechanic said they have to remove the trans in order to get to it, what makes the price astronomic..
the sound is driving me crazy! this is not how a 100k euro car should sound like...
