Default Truphone connection also not working

Hi everyone,

I have a 2013 Audi A8L 4.0T, and the Truphone sim was working before I left for my winter vacation in late December 2016, but after I came home in early January 2017, the 2G symbol is greyed out on the MMI screen, and the Google navigaton map on the MMI can't get a connection. Anybody else figured out what the issue is❓

Thanks

Mine also quit working in December. Not sure what the issue is.

Yep, that's fairly old news by now. AT&T has officially shutdown their 2G network at the end of 2016. T-Mobile will follow in 2020. Truphone switched to using AT&T's network back in July 2016, so if your MMI is older than 2014 and hasn't had its telephone module updated, then you are out of luck.

Yaah mine is a 2013 (A6) It has the original firmware, so I assume it's not been updated. I assume if I got a T-mob sim I could still run 2G until 2020?

Correct and in some areas you will still get 3G as well, but T-Mobile has been refarming their network for the last two years or so, which involves moving their 3G bands to a different part of their spectrum. Unfortunately, the hardware in a 2013 A6 doesn't support those bands, so if you live in one of the markets that has already been refarmed, then you will only receive 2G until 2020 and then it will go dead.

Has anyone figured out a solution for this?

Here is what I have found out, partially working and I will explain how, but its not ideal...

1 - I had a working truphone sim up until 12/31/16, working on T-Mobile and AT&T carriers, primarily in the Salt Lake City area.

2 - Truphone dropped support for T-Mobile on 12/31/16, only using AT&T towers after that

3 - AT&T dropped 2G coverage and my 2012 A7 doesn't support AT&T 3G

4 - I determined from Audi that T-mobile is still using the old 3G frequencies here in this part of the USA...they have not upgraded the towers around here and no plans to do it any time soon. In that light, if I want to spend more for Audi Connect, I could do so, they sent me a new audi connect sim in order to do that if I want, but I'm still holding out for a more affordable solution. Should be able to use any valid T-Mobile sim here in this area.

5 - I obtained a freedompop sim and plugged it into the car, and it works. However every time I turn on the car, I am prompted with a YES/NO confirmation about whether I want to allow data roaming, which is free with this sim, but annoying to have to answer that question every time.

If I can figure out a way to disable the data roaming prompt I would be happy as can be as freedompop is basically free up to 200MB/month, which I will never pass. But that prompt is surely annoying.

Does anyone know of any other low cost T-Mobile pre paid sim that might not involve data roaming?

Or does anyone know how to turn off the data roaming prompt?

Don't know about how roaming works with the MMI. I thought if you allow it in the settings it shouldn't keep asking, but I've never been in a roaming situation with the MMI. Freedompop uses T-Mobile. The AT&T you see on the MMI is the carrier your Bluetooth connected phone uses, not the MMI.

My guess is it's something coded into the MMI in combination with the FreedomPop sim card itself since as far as I know, they are the only provider that requires the roaming option be activated for AC to work.
