Overheating warning
Guys out and about today in my 3.0Tdi and got a red thermometer appear and a warning to stop car asap.
It then disappeared and returned about 10 mins later and again disappeared but this was as I was pulling into the house.
I popped bonnet and no bubbling not water loss and no over heating of the car either it was sitting at mid point 90.
Could it be a sensor?

Did the message say anything about the coolant being too hot? If yes then your coolant thermostat is defective. I just had mine changed 2 weeks ago. My 2012 A7 has only 24000 miles.

Off the top of my head it said stop car imediatly. Then warning completly disappeared whete as it would usually leave a constant icon on dash.

update
So I had my car out today for a drive and done approx. 40-50 miles.
I also had a wee blast with a little Vauxhaul Astra VXR so engine was well and truly warm.
Good news is no warning and Temp gauge sat at 90deg mid point as per normal.
Finger crossed and will keep an eye on it as all codes have been cleared to see what returns if anything.
If it does I'm thinking it's the sensor.

It will also show that icon after warning about coolant being to low. Maybe it's just right at the line and driving made it trip depending on going up/down hill, etc?

Most likely a sensor. Diesel engines generate heat when under load so if you were driving around hammer down, it's a cooling system problem. If you're driving like most dull adults, including me, it's a good chance that a sensor or whatever reads the sensor is the problem.

:( update
So out in the car today after many mile since the last post and BOING! up it comes again (Got a picture this time)
It says
SWITCH OFF ENGINE AND CHECK COOLANT LEVEL and has the red thermometer picture.
The coolant is bang on can not over heating and off it went again.
I was then sitting in my garage doing a vcds check for codes with engine off and car had been sitting as engine temp was 71 degs after I checked and BOING! up comes the warning again and then vanishes.
I even got out just to double check the level and all is well and where it is meant to be.
I can confirm that the fans etc do come on and off when idling and up at temp but the issue is it thinks the coolant level is to low when it's not???
I'm thinking it has to be a sensor on the way out but which one?
I see at the bottom of the bottle it has 2 wires which I presume is the level warning?
