01E is the trans of choice for any high power 1990/2000s Audi to swap in. Lots of info on Motorgeek of people swapping them into their turbo cars. Axles break before the trans breaks.

Most measurements from average of 3 or more readings. This is a draft for a custom flywheel with Tilton 7½" button clutch between a 01E and a 4.2 v8 40v engine with the 8 bolt pattern.

Default small update

no further progress, im looking to buy a house so I can start working on this and enjoy this hobby!!!
i have rethought the tranny design. with the feedback some of you left about its strength, I gave it a thought. so instead of making the bell end steel ill pour it in aluminum. it will just be beefed up, it will be solid as opposed to the gussets and ribbing, so basically very very fat. the lightening cuts inside will be filled also, ill just machine for the shafts, gears, selectors, oil galley.

Default Motor swap

I've been away working on house and getting another vehicle running... I'm back.
still hesitate to condition the cylinders of a disassembled block I have,

so decided to just swap this motor that's running in.
I think I have everything... but time. Although I'll keep taking little steps here and there.
also got some other ideas, I'm thinking this is prefect for a rear turbo. I never like thought of adding any more forward weight on audis setup. but have wondered how better the converter behind the axle in some of the newer audis handles. Want to put rear radiators, hung in a flow-through bumper. A air wing underhung as well. Roll cage. I'm wanting to keep this car very discreet. Id like to drive to/from the track without looking like it.

I've had similar thoughts myself. I still have my first Audi sitting in the shop, waiting for me to get around to doing something with it (99 A8 short wheelbase, pearl white over blue leather).

I've picked up a few more over the years to decide what the build ought to be. For a serious build, rods will be a weak point. I wasn't able to find anything short of a custom order for the 4.2, but Audi did produce the BCY in the 03 RS6 sedan in the US market, and that has a much stronger bottom end. I had a C5 RS6 for a few years, putting down 525 to the wheels - that's a great motor and worth consideration. You can find build threads detailing the work necessary to run the BCY in the D2 A8. It's non-trivial.

I knew the automatic transmission was also not going to work, and I'd need the O1E. I initially started looking for 6mt parts cars, but did a little research on the 2.7 and thought it might be worth checking out a stage 3 car, so I picked up an S4 Avant with RS6 turbos. It puts out mid 400s and is a ton of fun. I then stumbled into an 04 Allroad with the F21 Frankenturbo setup. The power is similar, but the S4 and Allroad O1E gearing differs pretty substantially.

The BCY (c5 rs6, 4.2L twin turbo) power comes on at low rpm - it pulls like a freight train at anything over 2500. (Mine was an MTM tuned car.) The BCY rotating assembly is already stout - I don't know what the real limit is. The aluminum is also strong, but I moved on to consideration of the 2.7 before I really validated everything. The BCY, in my view, is an eminently respectable choice. Unfortunately, the D2 transplant would be a significant expense, few BCY's were made, and aftermarket support is limited.

The 2.7 cars are mild mannered until 3k, and the real fun comes higher. Aftermarket support is decent - rods, pistons, valves, and titanium valve springs are all available. There are also a number of parts from other v6 motors that can be used. For example, it is possible to use the AVK (3L v6, b6) crankshaft and oversized pistons to build a 3L stroker. The block is carbon graphite iron, which is now used in Caterpillar high RPM diesels, and people have built these motors to push north of 1,000 horspower. The 2.7 blocks are still cheap and plentiful, and you can find incomplete (or wrecked) projects that people are dumping all day long. Audi actually produced the D2 with a 2.8L V6 for the euro market, and there are build threads around of the transplant, which is much less work than the BCY, and the 2.7 leaves plenty of room for maintenance in the D2 engine bay.

I am looking forward to see where you take this.
