1997 4.2Q D2 Weird AC issue
Hello,
I have recently bought an A8 D2 pre-facelift and because of that don't know much about the history of the car. When I got the car the fresh air blower motor was stuffed and did not blow any air at all. I managed to get it working by turning the brushes around in their socket. At first the AC was icy cold and worked very well. When having a long drive I noticed the AC coldness dropping slowly. It went to the point where there was no cold air coming from the vents at all. I thought that there must be a leak in the system and left it untouched. The compressor has been turning on without any problems. After a couple of days of driving the AC started to blow cold air again. Unfortunately it didn't last long. Now it seems to work perfectly in the night but not at all during the day. Please note that during night time it can cool down the car perfectly even when there's 30C outside. The car HAS a solar sunroof. As I don't have any idea where to start looking I thought of asking some advice. So anything is very much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Sander

Since you have no history of maintenance. I'd look into re-charging the AC system. I had a similar issue and it was discovered my Freon was low. Once the system was re-charged, all worked well.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Thanks for the replies!
I'll give the re-charge a go. Seems like a good first step. Well at least now that I'm not overthinking the whole issue...
I'll let you know about the outcome.

Also check to see that your electric radiator(condenser) fan is turning whenever the AC is set to Auto.

I agree, the AC can get weak when the charge is low despite having some charge, low pressure cutoff not engaged, etc.
I have not looked at the heater valve and/or mixing/blending flap in these cars as it has not been a problem for me but in some cars the AC is dramatically affected by hot water flow or a problem with the system that blends in warm air from the heater core.
